City face Burnley on Saturday having scored just 10 times in eight Premier League games so far – their lowest return since the 2006-07 season – and with just five in their last six it is a sharp decline after racking up 102 last year.
Record goalscorer Sergio Aguero has returned from a hamstring problem and his manager believes it is only a matter of time before they start finding the net with regularity.
Pep Guardiola has insisted that Manchester City will soon embark on a glut of goals
Gabriel Jesus and Raheem Sterling are part of a City side who have scored just 10 league goals
‘One day it will break and we’ll score more goals, we’ll put on the table what we deserve,’ Guardiola said.
‘It’s time to put more players in the box and sooner or later it is going to happen. In the last games we created much more. You can lose the game but you are closer to winning if you create more chances.
‘We have to continue with the good feelings we have, try to move forward and try to score goals so that’s what we have to do.’
City dominated Olympiacos in midweek, having 22 shots on goal, but only found the net once. They have scored 22 goals in their last five home matches against Burnley.
That is their worst return for 14 years after eight games but Sergio Aguero is back for City
The return of Aguero – who Guardiola admitted had endured a ‘tough’ week following the death of father-in-law Diego Maradona – offers them additional firepower.
‘He’s going to give us good moments this season,’ Guardiola added. ‘He’s still not in the best condition, we cannot forget how long he was out.
‘In the middle of the season he needs to be so sharp but we don’t have doubts. He needs time to get it, in training and with more minutes.
‘Then he has seven months ahead to show he deserves the (contract) talks to do what is best for him, for the club. I was lucky to play and manage with incredible players. He’s one of them. I never found a big star like him to be like Sergio is.’
