Retired former England defender Joleon Lescott has made a shock move to Spanish fourth-tier side Racing Murcia.

The Birmingham-born centre back, who is now 38, played 26 times for England and won two league titles, an FA Cup and a League Cup whilst at Manchester City.

Lescott also played for Wolves, Everton and West Bromwich Albion in a career which began in 2000, but he stopped playing after leaving Sunderland in June 2017.

The Racing Murcia tweet announcing his signing translates to: ‘Our president Morris Pagniello and the club are happy to announce the signing of English star Joleon Lescott, who will play the Copa del Rey match against Levante.’

Despite not playing in any professional games in the intervening three years, Racing Murcia have signed him up, seemingly just for one match.

Lescott has worked as a loan manager at the Etihad and a pundit on BT Sport and Sky Sports since retiring.

As reported by Sportsmail last year, he also joined the England U21 setup under Aidy Boothroyd.

His attendance was following in the footsteps of Sol Campbell and Iffy Onuora as part of an initiative to help BAME members of the community get into coaching.

Racing Murcia – a club without a Wikipedia page – currently lie seventh out of 11 teams in Group 13 Group 3 on the fourth step of Spanish football’s pyramid following a 4-0 victory over Lorca in their first win of the season.

Levante are 18th and in the relegation zone in LaLiga, only above bottom side Celta Vigo on goal difference after only one win this campaign.

The relegation-threatened side, boasting ex-Crystal Palace midfielder Jose Campana and former Blackburn forward Ruben Rochina in their ranks, will have to recover from a clash with Barcelona on December 13, while Racing play local rivals Ciudad de Murcia on the same day.

Racing will then host Levante in the Copa del Rey first round at Nueva Condomina on the evening of Wednesday December 16.
