For years, Black Friday in-store sales have crept earlier and earlier into Thanksgiving Day itself, to the consternation of those who cherish the holiday as a day of rest, and the delight of holiday deal-seekers.

Not so this year, thanks to the coronavirus pandemic. Major retailers including Walmart, Target and Best Buy will remain closed on Thanksgiving, joining with chains like Home Depot that have held fast to a tradition of shutting down for the holiday.

When the store doors do fling open on Friday morning, retailers are taking extra precautions to prevent a huge crush of crowds that could speed the spread of the virus.

Most retailers have offered rolling deals, both in-store and online, throughout November and beyond, in a bid to spread out the opportunities for deal seeking.

Stores are also offering curb-side pickup and speedy delivery. For those who still want to shop in-store, retailers will require face coverings and have capacity guidelines in place to prevent crowding – and some will even offer a reservation systems for shopping.

Below, DailyMail.com presents a Black Friday guide to some of the nation’s largest retail chains, with information on store hours, pandemic precautions, and alternatives to in-store shopping.

This year, Walmart is offering a promotion called Black Friday Deals for Days, with rolling promotions throughout the month of November.

This week’s phase kicked off online on Wednesday at 7pm, with new deals landing at midnight on Thanksgiving online and in stores at 5am.

When doors open on Black Friday, customers will be asked to form a single, straight line to enter the store.

Walmart staff will be handing out sanitized shopping carts, and ‘health ambassadors’ will be posted at entrances to greet shoppers and remind them to put on a mask.

The company will limit the number of customers allowed into the store at a time to help reduce congestion and promote social distancing

Customers will be directed to shop down the right-hand side of the aisles to prevent crowding, Walmart says.

Curbside pickup on in-store deals will be available in the majority of Walmart stores. Shoppers will receive a ready-for-pickup email that will contain all the details for your deals pickup experience in your local store.

Walmart says its promotions throughout November will include deals on top brands like HP, Instant Pot, LEGO, L.O.L. Surprise!, Roku, Shark, as well as deals on many Walmart-exclusive items.

Target stores are also offering expanded self-checkout lanes and contactless payment through the Target app, eliminating the need to pick up the scanning device at self-checkout.

‘Year over year, the investments we’ve made in our business and team have made Target the easiest place to shop in America,’ said said Target CEO Brian Cornell in a statement. ‘As we’ve navigated the pandemic, that focus has evolved to ensure we’re also creating the safest place for our guests to shop.’

Target is also offering expanded curbside pickup for orders through its mobile app and same-day delivery with Shipt.

‘Our completely new approach to Black Friday is giving guests flexibility to safely get the best holiday deals on their own terms,’ said Christina Hennington, Target’s executive vice president and chief merchandising officer, in a statement.

Throughout the month, Target has offered deals through its Black Friday Now program, which continues through November 28.
