Festival Pass is coming to you early due to the holiday.
Even though it’s just my husband and I for the holiday, I’m looking forward to a long weekend of leftover turkey and catching up on the Hallmark movies I talked about last week that are filling up my DVR.
And while I’m not doing my crazy Black Friday run this year, I will lift my personal ban on playing Christmas music.
My old school favorites are the first two volumes of the “A Very Special Christmas” compilations, with the Keith Haring artwork. I had them on cassette. My two recent favorites are Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings “It’s a Holiday Soul Party” and “Love the Holidays” from the Old 97’s.
Speaking of the holidays, we have the new Holidays & Nights newsletter. It launched this week and it’s full of cheer — and since I’m one of the authors, perhaps a little bit of snark as well.
This week I also have some news to share with more drive-in shows on the way.
Kick off 2021 with Deadmau5
Insomniac has added several new drive-in concerts to its Park ‘N Rave Concert Series at the NOS Events Center in San Bernardino. Deadmau5 is playing New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day and also performing as his techno alter ego Testpilot on Jan. 2. Valentino Khan also has a pair of shows in December. Find out how to get tickets.
House in the lot
The Drive-In OC concerts in Anaheim has announced a house music series coming to the venue. Electronic music veteran Green Velvet will perform Dec. 11 and Claude VonStroke will appear on Dec. 29. Get the details.
A Thanksgiving stream
Digital Mirage, a streaming music festival that’s had two previous editions this year, is gearing up for a third helping with a Thanksgiving weekend event. Dubbed “Digital Mirage Friendsgiving,” the festival will run Nov. 27-28 with sets from The Glitch Mob, Tiesto, JSTJR, Louis the Child and more than two dozen other artists. Find out how to watch.
Just because Coachella didn’t happen in 2020 doesn’t mean you can’t get a T-shirt. The festival has launched two clothing collections. One of them features collaborations with Black designers and there’s a pretty sweet-looking sweatshirt that gives a nod to “Do the Right Thing.” Find out more.
Black Friday means a fresh batch of Record Store Day releases. Reporter Peter Larsen talked to Aimee Mann about the 20th anniversary reissue of “Bachelor No. 2,” and what it was like to perform on the Oscars.
Ho! Ho! No.
Last week I shared the news about Brew Ho! Ho! is coming back to Oak Canyon Park next month as a drive-in event. This week I have bad news. It’s not happening because of COVID. Get the details.
Happy holiday tunes
As I mentioned above, our Bay Area colleague Jim Harrington has put together a compilation of great holiday albums for 2020. Take a look at his list and check it twice.
Keep it classy and classic
When it comes to holiday music, I always remember something my best friend told me when we were teenagers: “It’s officially Christmas in my house when my parents bring out the Johnny Mathis record.” Here are some of the classic Christmas albums that endure.
Holidays & Nights
Don’t forget about our new holiday events newsletter. In the debut edition we’re talking about the changes at the Mission Inn’s Festival of Lights, DIY Hallmark movies and oh so much more. Check it out.
Come on, get happy
Reporter Richard Guzman found his happy place in a parking garage in Century City. No, really. He went to the Happy Place: The Drive-Thru and there was shoulder dancing involved.
BottleRock postpones again
BottleRock Napa Valley has already moved dates twice due to the coronavirus pandemic. It will now move from Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day weekend. Get the details.
