President-elect Joe Biden’s pick for his national security adviser trashed President Trump’s decision to recognize Jerusalem as Israel’s capital during an interview with a reporter from a Chinese Communist Party-controlled media company.
Jake Sullivan, who was among a number of Cabinet picks and top administration officials formally unveiled by Biden on Tuesday, also criticized Trump’s withdrawal from the Iran nuclear deal as posing a greater risk to the world than Tehran does in an interview with CGTN in December 2017.
In the interview Sullivan panned the president’s decision to relocate the US embassy to Jerusalem and recognize it as Israel’s capital as a “political decision.”
“This was a political decision, not a foreign policy decision. This was about Trump and his supporters. It was not about moving the peace process forward,” Sullivan said.
“It’s hard to find a good argument for this decision with respect to advancing the cause of peace in the Middle East,” he continued.
Sullivan, who advised Biden when he was vice president and served as Hillary Clinton’s foreign policy adviser during the 2016 presidential campaign, said Trump’s decision “created turbulence and turmoil when we didn’t need to do that.”
He went on to say he didn’t believe that the US was near a peace agreement between Israel and the Palestinians “so I’m not sure if it will have that significant an impact on the possibility of arriving at a two-state solution.”
Sullivan, who acknowledged to a House committee that he told reporters in 2016 that the Trump campaign may have had ties with Russia, claimed the world is more concerned about the “risk Washington poses” than they are about Tehran, in discussing Trump seeking to exit the Iran nuclear deal.
“I think Donald Trump has been playing games with the Iran nuclear deal,” he said in the CGTN interview. “He’s been raising questions about whether he’s going to stay in or leave. And in doing that, he has created a situation in which the rest of the world is more worried about the risk Washington poses than they are about the risk Tehran poses. And that is not in America’s strategic interest.”
