France reported a record 52,010 new coronavirus infections in the past 24 hours, health authorities said on Sunday. The number of COVID-19 infections in the country has been increasing dramatically for weeks.
France has earlier introduced a mass testing program. According to the latest data, some 17% of people who were tested on Sunday, were found to have the virus.
The government introduced new measures for two-thirds of the country from Saturday. Under the new rules, people can only go out at night if they have good reason to do so. The restrictions apply in 54 French regions and in the overseas collectivity, French Polynesia in the South Pacific.
The new cases took the total to 1,138,507. According to the health ministry, 116 people had died from the disease over the past 24 hours, compared to from 137 on Saturday, taking the total to 34,761.
